Current NWS advisory for the Baltimore-Washington area
1:00 PM Mon 2/21/2011 Forecaster Jason: Good afternoon and Happy President's Day! With an arctic front creeping south across the region, temperatures will remain steady or fall slowly from the 40's to the upper 30's this afternoon. Light rain this evening will changeover to snow tonight.
AMOUNTS: A Winter Storm Warning has just been issued for northern portions of the region for tonight, with a Winter Weather Advisory for the remainder of the area. We still expect 3-6 inches of snow tonight for most areas, with slightly higher amounts possible near the Mason Dixon line and lower amounts for southern Anne Arundel County.
TIMING & IMPACTS: Snow will by nightfall will become heavy overnight, falling at the rate of 1-2" per hour in some locations. The snow should begin exiting the region between 6 - 9AM tomorrow, with highs only reaching the mid 30s. Temperatures will fall through the 20's overnight into Wednesday, with extnsive refreezing of slush on untreated roadways, bridges and overpasses. It is highly likely this storm system will affect school schedules both Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, as temperatures do not appear to go much above freezing until late in the week.
We will continue posting updates throughout the day on this pending snow event for the region.

great job, thanks!
Hey all Hope I'm doing this right LOL Looks great ya'll
Where can I find the full moon picture please?
Any chance the storm could slow up and give us more snow? I need a good snow, i.e. more than the little snow offerings we have been getting. NEXT week, is it Monday into Tuesday timeframe??Maybe THIS one will be bigger...
on the radar looks like precip shield is expanding more then models anticipated while most of it is virga though it is a good sign. is it me or does the radar look stronger further south then the models anticipated and doesnt that have to move east towards us?
And Mr. Foot with snow totals in the midwest higher then expected with many 6-8 totals is that a good thing for us with the S/W comming from the north west still?
I took a nap for an hour and the temp dropped 6 degrees. Getting cold out there. Feels like there's a real bite to it.
Hey All! Be checking in later. Need to read some like when does it start :)
Good evening to all! Patiently awaiting the snow to hit the ground...enough of this virga!
Just checked in on the FF FB page...geesh.... I am glad we have the comment section here is all I will say! No one reads a map-they just like to type "how much snow in ( insert town here) ? "
I have my Manwich ready...just in case and will be interested in reading everyone's thoughts tonight! :)
BTW....the moon picture is on the FB page!
Still waiting for any advisories or watches to be posted? When and will this happen? Usually my weatherbug icon is lighting up by this point.
There is an advisory for Harford County, not sure where you are?
Oh, and didn't mean for that ^ to sound sippy...really just meant...not sure where your neck of the woods is :)
how much snow will 21228 get :)...I miss my emocons :) Ho Co I'm with you nuff with the virga let's move it!!!!!! DP is 23* according to my weatherbug and temp is 36* As that gap closes we know the air is getting more daaaaamp! Henry Margusity said it's snowing in State College PA...odd for a storm that is supposed to be coming up from the south. I guess a low will form off the coast?
Are you trying to tell me something>? my word to type is mentl :P
Glad to see chatter and some familiar names, I thought I had lost everyone! This new site is nice but a little confusing...at least for me! HoCotchr - I agree with you about the FB page comments. This is where I come to get the real info presented with a bit, (okay a LOT) of humor :) , and always explained for those of us without the background knowledge of weather. Thanks a bunch!
You are all right about the FB page. I get tired of reading how much snow will _________ get? cracks me up. My cousin lives in Cumberland and she said it is snowing like crazy there. Calling for 3-6 for her. I really hope this storm does it's thing during the critical time in the am. I would like another long weekend. Looking forward to seeing what Andy has to say.
Oh btw....when the site upgrade is finished, will there be one comment page or different pages for each area?
I've decided I would rather post here too than on FB. Some of the posters there are insane...yeah, the how much IMBY (even with a snow map posted at a first grade level) and the "it's going to snow two weeks from now...will schools be closed". Even the ones that interject their own forecast...geesh! So waving hi to everyone here and looking forward to chatting with everyone :)
Weatherbug is now calling for only an inch in Howard County.... let's hope they're wrong!! I'm still keeping faith that we can get 3-6 out of this storm.... c'mon mother nature!!
Matt this morning they were calling for no snow...well they didn't mention snow so they were not calling for it LOL!
I like to be able to look @ RH and DP...Wind Direction and speed...the forecast is sometimes meh!
Sorry Hi Lori!
Hi Rufus!
I like following the comments here too. I usually just read what you guys have to say, but it is nice to see the same people commenting. Bring the snow!!
Ravens: suck
Snow (lack of): suck
Hmmmmmm...got it! Moving to Wisconsin: snow in abundance, and a team that's still in it.
Where does one find a cheesehead on short notice?
:-)
Ended up with about 3.25" here. Not shabby..Just waiting for the salt truck and plow.
Let's hope next week's storm is all snow...we will all be benefiting from it somehow
As much as I love snow, I must admit, no snow day today makes for a much happier exam period. I know we all want as much as we can get, but it seems like a pretty normal year for snow in the Ho Co area, or am I imagining things?
How'd we get the old comments here from last week??? Hmmm...perhaps because of that boxing match between Mr. Foot and Andy??? Andy wanted the "old" comments back...technically they are! LOL!
If you scroll down to the next "section".. you will find the boxing match comments.. :)
I know...but I do think it is funny that the old ones are up at the top of the page! Ironic! :)
Sadly, it looks like the JETS are not going to help make it a green Superbowl! Oh well...just another game then...will mostly be watching that score for a friendly "Superbowl" pool! Dagnabit!
Someone order up a hailstorm and take out Heinz Field right now. The Jets can't do it, the Steelers must be stopped by any means necessary...
hear ya HoCoK...
no way Jets come back .. no way.. looks like I will be watching the PUPPY BOWL instead.. they are much cuter anyway!
All the comments from yesterday gone?
I am going to now cast this storm. Models are everywhere. State College NWS felt this storm would track more west of guidance earlier when guidance was west. Gfs went east earlier this evening. If their logic holds that might be a good thing. Will see what 0z runs tell us. Anyway, no matter what they say they will shift again I'm sure. So this isa wait and see storm.
Andy I read your earlier post. I know where Norrisville Elem. is. I used to pass that all the time going to Taylor Haus. Are you near Maizequest?
Not too far. I'm about 7-8 miles to the northeast of Taylor Haus. It is like a 10 minute drive from me.
NWS STATE COLLEGE UPDATED 5:22 AM
...LATEST NCEP WWD SNOWFALL IS HEAVILY WEIGHTED ON THE ECMWF SOLUTION...
AND RANGES FROM 2-4" OVER THE CENTRAL MOUNTAINS (WITH LITTLE IF
ANY SNOWFALL NORTH OF I-80) TO 8-10" OVER EASTERN LANCASTER COUNTY
OVER MY FAR SOUTHEAST. OBVIOUSLY...SLIGHT CHANGES IN THE TRACK AND
INTENSITY AND ORIENTATION OF KEY BOUNDARY LAYER FEATURES/LLJ WILL
BE PARAMOUNT TO EVENTUAL SNOW ACCUMS. FOR NOW...MEAN GEFS STORM
TOTAL PRECIP AND ECMWF QPF ARE IN REASONABLE AGREEMENT AND
STRONGLY SUPPORT A LIGHT TO MODERATE SNOWFALL FOR CENTRAL AND
SOUTHEAST PORTIONS OF CENTRAL PA BEGINNING WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND
WRAPPING UP BEFORE 12Z THU.
WITH THIS IN MIND...DID NOT MAKE MUCH IN THE WAY OF CHANGES TO
GOING GRIDS FOR THE EXTENDED PERIOD AS OVERALL SCENARIO IS
DEPICTED WELL IN CURRENT FORECASTS AND EXACT DETAILS WON`T BE
KNOWN FOR STILL SOME TIME. A FEW TO SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOW APPEAR
LIKELY FROM PLACES LIKE STATE COLLEGE AND ALTOONA TO LANCASTER AND
YORK...WITH THE BEST CHANCE FOR 6" OR MORE EXTENDING TO THE
SOUTHEAST OF A BLOOMSBURG TO LEWISTOWN TO BEDFORD LINE...
Andy you r right.
Darn Jets!
I'll check in later got to get moving :)
ok Bressi just posted 3-6 in on the back end of rain or out to sea. When is this storm supposed to happen?
Ok Andy now I know aprox where you are. I am very familiar with the apple places out there. Loved Taylor Haus. Had the best broasted chicken. So sorry it is closed now. Once it was sold, it didn't do as well.
Currently I am reading that the models are coming to some kind of agreement, however with the system arriving later on Wednesday, how many more times will the models change. Today I explained the concept of "nowcasting" to the students; they really enjoyed Terp's comments on the storm situation.
what's the scoop? awwww comfi is my word
