IF YOU JUST WANT THE WEATHER FOR THE WEEK, SCROLL TO THE PREVIOUS POST
Now that we're at the middle of February, you continue to observe absolutely no indication whatsoever of any serious attempt by winter to make a comeback and finally set things right again. You've probably thinking, "Oh I'll bet he has some cosmic rationale for why we're still going to get a big storm (Kahuna 2) but it'll just end up another disappointing storm in a luckless winter." As a true scientist, I would have to agree with you up to this point. But you know me, ever the optimist. I do have convincing meteorological and climatological evidence that indicate the best of winter is yet to come. For this evening's update, I am working on a discussion of notable late winter patterns which followed this set of data:
1. DECEMBER SAW ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES FOR MUCH OF THE NORTHEAST
2. THE WINTER HAD 3 PERIODS OF ALTERNATING WARM THEN COLD THEN WARM AGAIN
3. JANUARY WAS AN UNDER-PERFORMING MONTH FOR SNOW AND COLD
4. EACH WARM SPELL WAS FOLLOWED BY A STRONGER COLD WAVE
5. MARCH ENDED UP BEING HISTORICALLY VERY COLD AND FREQUENTLY STORMY
I cannot take all the credit for this study. I located the data for this analysis through comments made by Accuweather forecasters who point to changes in the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI is a measure of how El Nino air pressure and sea temps change from month to month). What I am doing is to show you a correlation between years when the SOI had a strong negative trend in December AND February, the late Feb to late March period produced some of the most historical snowstorms of all time in the Northeast.
WHAT I CAN SAY FOR NOW IS...The possibility exists that an event like the March 1993 Superstorm, or the March 1962 Nor'easter...awaits us as the end of this pattern, over the next 15-25 day period. I will provide a clear and cosmic rationale for this, later tonight.
