6:45 am COMMENTARY
I wake up this morning unable to sleep further, not because the ladies are up, but rather that I just had to look out the window. Nothing yet, so I wonder.. hey maybe the storm did back off after all. Good, that would mean my forecast has a good chance of verifying. So I stumble downstairs trying to stay quiet in order to have at least 39 and 1/2 seconds of private time today before, well, you know... the Golden Girls wake up. I really do love all of them and I enjoy nothing more than spending all day playing and watching them grow. But when Golden Girl Jayla wakes up (oop, I just heard pitter patter of feet upstairs) and sees me on the computer, she will say... "Good Morning Daddy... (pause) get off the computer." Sure enough, there she is... okay, so there goes the morning and my update. I'll try to get back to the forecast after breakfast.

Basically it looks like my original forecast needs some serious dressing up, as Rockhound said, it is time to embrace the horror (and the hype), because a total storm accumulation of 10-15 inches along the I-95 corridor is a serious serious problem that will without a doubt cancel most schools on Monday from DC to Boston. So Yes Virginia, I am raising my totals and will do that soon. Thank you to many who sent a message requesting to be added to the forecast update list. Be back later.

Just looked at a graphic on Ack-U-Weather. They have the Baltimore area in the dark blue 12" stripe, if I am reading it correctly. I'll believe it when I see it. By the way, Mr. Foot, as a parent of twins (boys in my case), believe me when I say, it does get better eventually. Mine are now almost 12, and they can get themselves breakfast and go to the bathroom alone and everything! So hang in there... :)

Mr. Foot,

Some form of frozen/liquid something has begun in Dundalk at 8:30 AM. It really looks hazardous out there and I think I'll have to cancel Saturday Detention. I'll bet a lot of our student customers this AM are going to be disappointed when I tell them, thanks for coming, now go home.
So when I get back, I'll post a full storm roundup

Welcome back, Mr. Foot...and hello to anyone else.

I'll keep an eye out here in the Great Brown North, oops, White (Fallston, Md.)

The 6z runs have our part of the I95 getting whomped. Look at the MM5 and the HPC(for the technological snowdogs).

I think this one will be worth the wait.

Julee,

Andy is probably just having nothing to write even though he has a Heavy Snow Warning it is still sunny in York, pa.

Julee said...

Pikesville had some snow around 8:30 as well, but it has changed it's mind.
As long as it starts before evening so I can SEE it snowing, I'm happy!
Hi to everyone in the Flake-Loving Community!

TerpFellow's accounted for, but where's Andy? Still asleep?

Julee said...

AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I see the sun peeking out as well! It's casting shadows!!!!!!!!!!!Nooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To paraphrase Tom Hanks, "There's no sunshine in a SNOWSTORM!"

Mr.B said...

Julee,

Andy probably just has nothing to write. It is still sunny in york,pa. I hate the wait before the storm. Just Get Here Already!!!
Then I can kick back and enjoy the flakes.

I'm just coming out hybernation after this furnace of a winter. Great to see the old gang back, and I'm pretty pumped up about this one. Some of the best storms are never predicted correctly but the forecasts seem to update themselves along with the development of the storm. You see totals like 4-8, 6-10, 12-15, and sometime up from there. Don't know if this will be a monster, but if it keeps SLOWING down we may all have something to smile about!

Mr.B said...

Ummm its 39 now and rising. Not Cool! Radar shows precip but its still mostly sunny! NOOO!!!!

Eric said...

My new name may say Eric, but I am formally known as EH Boston. Good to be back.

Forecasts around here are calling for a good 10-14" with 14"+ on the south shore with blizzard conditions tomorrow.

Still bright sunshine, not even a cloud in the sky here in the Boston area. Temp is a chilly 23 right now nearing 11am.

Tomorrow will be a good day to stay in and watch a movie and get ready to dig out at night when the heavy snow tapers and go out into windchills below zero with blowing and drifting snow in my face.

I LOVE IT!

linda said...

Hi everyone, You all seem to be looking forward to this big snow event, as am I. Cloudy here in Bucks County, and the snow is coming I can feelt in my bones!! I am going to stay up all night to watch it in progress, that's the fun of it. Everybody enjoy.

Mr Foot,What's the difference between a winter storm warning and a heavy snow warning?

Great to see the old gang back...thanks for not giving up on me Eric, Linda, Terp, Mr.B., Julee and Chip.

Finally back from Saturday Detention. Had some pancakes and am watching the thermometer here in Dundalk drift to a balmy 42.

Folks I am still sticking to my 4" in Dundalk until I see more than 4" on the ground. A lot is going to have to happen in a short time. Now I see TWC is calling for a possible mix in DC, which may cut down on amounts. And this snow is going to hit a warmer ground thanks to the Evil sun. That means to get the biblical 10-15" in Dundalk at least 18" will have to fall out of the sky to negate the melting of the first 2-3 inches.
We shall see. I admit that I will have to adjust my amounts quickly if evidence of the BK this is being called as starts to come true.

be back soon with more info.

Clouds have finally locked in here in greencastle got up to 40 now at 38 and dropping. Just looked at the latest GFS and it shows more precip over the pa/md boarder. Good for me!!! I think that means .7" QPF = 5-8". I hope.

P.S: Good to have you back to foot. I got scared on friday when the only update you had said "Final Update...It's going to snow!"

Mr. Foot said...

Linda:
I think the NWS is using the Heavy Snow Warning now because Winter Storm Warning is not specific enough and does not scare the public enough into taking action.
The problem with a HSW is that the public;s expectation is raised so high (average person would think, geez Im going to get 1-2 feet of snow outta this) that a HSW HAS to verify at or over the forecast or it will come across as more crying wolf.

I also think they are using HSW over WSW because precip type is only snow and not sleet/fz rain etc to complicate the forecast.
I love snow and storms, but I will remain skeptical on this until I see MORE than 4 SOLID inches on the ground in Dundalk.

Mr. B.. that Friday update was a little prank on my friend in SE PA. Anyone else, our online clique is open to anyone who wants to join. All opinions are welcome.

BTW if Balto Metro gets 8"+ there's no school on Monday.

Mr.B said...

38 and precip moving north. Foot when do you think the radar will start to fill in?

Mr. Foot said...

Paul Kocin just gave his alcohol consumption forecast on TWC, so I will paraphrase:

Boston: Consume at least 2 drinks have a great time tonight because tomorrow you can't go out
(10-15")

New York: Go out and drink now, limit to no more than 2 and come back early because snow is coming soon.
(8-14")

Philadelphia to DC: Stop drinking now and get home to prepare, because "those greens will be turning white soon."
(7-12")

Julee said...

Mr. Foot,

I saw Norm Lewis issuing a prediction of 4 inches and was very sceptical of anything higher.
Are you putting on your scepticals and moving into HIS camp?

Julee said...

p.s. 12:16 - I'm looking at falling flakes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

linda said...

Thanks Mr.Foot, for clearing that up. I will be wary!! All my cleaning done, cake in the oven, and patiently awaiting snow's arrival. I'm weird, I have to have everything done, so that I can just sit and watch the snow with nothing on my mind. I'm soooo excited!!

Hagerstown: 5-10"
Greencastle: 2-4"

OR NOT! NWS at state college not sure whats up. Greencastle,pa 6" and I say it loud. Wait for it, wait, wait. Nope still no snow yet. I think within the next hour snow will be falling it is just approchig the boarder.

bell86 said...

Flakes are fallin here in Perry Hall. I hope for the 8"+ so Baltimore County will be off Monday.

Mr.B said...

Andy, I see its saying 37 in york. Is this correct? Still 38 here, that evil sun.

Andy, Southern York County PA said...

It is indeed 37 in York and 38.1 on my deck. Think when the precip. arrives there will be cooling. Our ground here is frozen from the last week of cold so I'm hopefull that it will stick when the moisture makes its way up here. Right now just a few light flurries flying.

Hey guys, still abundant sunshine up here. If you lived under a rock, you would have no idea the Blizzard of 2006 was coming to Boston. Temp is in the mid 20's, officially 26, we are under a BW and life is good. All the shovels are ready, still have not invested in a snowblower.

Some of the local forecasters are getting nervous up here and saying that they may raise their 10-15" predictions. (NECN) So, they put a big + at the end of that and are now forecasting 10-15"+.

Whoa!!! Hold on 50 degrees by Thursday and Friday. Say it ain't so.

Enjoy the snow while it lasts...

Mr.B said...

Good deal andy. Well it rose to 39 for about 10min now it is quickly droping down thourgh 37. Precip is crossing the md/pa line. Foot radar filling in?

Anonymous said...

I live in Elkridge, MD and weather.com says we will get 10-15 inches total snowfall. More than Baltimore to our north, DC to our south, Columbia to our west, and the Bay. So what's up? Do you think I should expect like a foot (no pun intended)?

Mr.B said...

DUMM DUMMM DUMMM ITS SNOWING!!!

Finally snow is flying here in greencastle and is very light at the moment but there is heavy banding just to my south. All I can say is BRING IT ON!!

P.S Temps just droped 1 degree in 3 minutes. Down to 36.5!

Mr.B said...

Light snow and 35.

Julee said...

TerpFellow:

Who's fault is it that I've been away from snow for so long?
I'll tell you . . . ERIC, the erstwhile EH from Boston, that's who's fault. He's hoarded it all.
With Mr. Foot away for so long, I have been unable to berate him for all the snow that they've had to date, while the Mid-Atlantic has gone begging.
Go ahead Eric, Mr. BlizzardWarning, tell us how much snow you've ALREADY had this winter.

linda said...

Light snow and 35degrees here in bucks county, let the big snow begin!!

Mr.B said...

34 Moderate snow and a heavy band moving in. YES!

kristine said...

Snow is really picking up here in Sparks...Started in Timonium around 12:15...lets go 8"...I could use a day no more though- then we hit rescheduling basketball games and that is just a headache...

Andy, Southern York County PA said...

34.8 degrees in Shrewsbury PA with moderate snow starting to stick to grass and deck. Sidewalks are getting damp but not yet sticking.

Anonymous said...

No snow in Elkridge with rain since 11 AM. Too warm right now. Surprised weather.com hasn't changed our 10-15 inch prediction. Their calling for snow fall rates of close to an inch an hour most of the night and possibly some thunder snow overnight. Guess that's why it hasn't been changed.

Andy, Southern York County PA said...

Temps taking a nose dive. 33.4 now.

Mr.B said...

32.9 and modrate to heavy snow. A dusting already on the ground, roads getting a white tint.

hoco md elkridge guy said...

Here in Elkridge, the temp has taken a nose dive dropping from 39-36 in less than a half an hour. It's still dropping and snow has started to fall. The prediction by weather.com is still 10-15 inches.

Anonymous said...

school WILL be open monday (atleast for SE PA--NW suburbs of Philly, Montgomery etc)

i dont know where the logic of saying schools will be closed comes from?

the roads will be clear by then....

Andy, Southern York County PA said...

Grass is now snow covered for the first time in a long time. We had a wild 25 minute mini "blizzard" about 3 weeks ago here with thunder snow as a cold front moved through our area and dropped an inch of snow. That is the last time it snowed here. Before that was mid December, so it is really nice to have a storm to look forward to. Would be nice to have thunder snow and wind tonight, but will not hold by breath but just wait and see. 33.1 now!

wvmommyof4 said...

Harpers Ferry,WV is getting moderate to heavy snow (just starting really snowing within the last hour). Ground is now white!!! I was really beginning to wonder temps were around 36 earlier with light snow and rain. Now temp. is 31 with great snow:)

wvmommyof4 said...

Hey Ms Sands is it snowing in Purcellville?

Mr.B said...

Moderate snow 32.5, coating on the ground. Radar motion is odd not much movement so can't see what snow bands are going where.

Eric said...

Julee, there is no snow on the ground up here in Boston. So far this season we have had only 19.4".

Last year at this date we had already had over 56"!

9" of our snow came on Dec. 9th before the 7 Week Thaw came in around the 15th of December.

Its been just as bad here in Boston as it has in the Mid Atlantic.

Hoping for all of us to get tons of snow!!

Have fun...

But if worst comes to worst, you can always move up here. 19.4" of snow is better than 4-5". lol

Andy, Southern York County PA said...

31.9 BELOW FREEZING AT LAST!

32 and starting ti lay on grass

Another Hereford Zone member... but living in Harford County. No snow here. Was snowing for a while but now it's just rain. I need to see some serious snow soon!

Hi Julee and Chip!!!!! :)

Mr.B said...

Just shy of a inch and 32.1, still snowying moderatly. NWS says 1-2" per hour rates tonight! Bring it in! Thundersnow!!!

Mr. Foot said...

Just woke up from my nap. My daughter came downstairs, went to the window and says, "It's snowing a wot." You all have been busy powderhounds out howling about your storm. Go snow!

Those of you in the Baltimore Metro region.... remember that I SAID ON THURSDAY A GENERAL 4" FOR THE AREA. The fact that Norm Lewis has COME DOWN to 4 inches is evidence my original concerns over this storm were justified.
(I said 4" on Thursday and will post what I wrote in email on the site)

For the record, 35 in Dundalk and light-moderate snow that juuusstt started a few minutes ago.
