DECISIONS, DECISIONS

2-13-07 Radar 600 AM

5:27 AM 2/13/2007 - ABOUT SCHOOL: This impact statement is directed at public and private schools, colleges, universities and adult and child daycare centers most affected by first stage of the storm. Western and Central PA are already receiving snow and those schools will have to close early if they have not already.
Due to the severity, extent and duration of this winter storm, many Baltimore and Washington area metro schools will be facing their biggest logistical nightmare of this decade if they open today.
The concern is that a few districts may decide they'll take the chance and open on time, then as the buses start rolling things really deteriorate quickly by 9AM, and we have a massive logistical nightmare:
  • Open must switch to closed, then we would have grades 6-12 to take home first, and as things progress, by the time the elementary kids are picked up, conditions are worse and those students are at greater risk.
  • Let's hope our officials take this into account in making the call. If you're a teacher or administrator, hopefully you already got your shower, drank your 2 cups of coffee and are dressed because it is going to be a long challenging day. Very long and challenging.

Well, no word on Baltimore County schools yet. If we're open, I need to get in the shower, and start the process of getting ready, and then get on the road... a couple private schools are closing... but no Baltimore City or County, no Harford, no Howard, no Anna Rundel... hmmm...

theyve still got plenty of time to give us off they got till 6 in the morning but i hate when they wait till the last second which screws with everyone because you know its not gonna start accumulating in the next 20 minutes your just gonna be closing schools based on forecast for our area during the day and that forecast wont change in the next 20 minutes and i couldnt see us going in with snow and ice on our agenda

Have followed this with great interest -- reader of your site for some time.

I teach English at Kenwood High(so we're neighbors in a way), and am in near-mortal dread of what's going to happen if schools open on time today. This might be an incredible mess....

At what point do we assume it's a go and g oload up the carwith rock salt and extra water for the trip home?

Queen Annes and Kent gave 90 minute delays which serves no purpose at all because now ur just sending them in under worse weather than regular

Are we witnessing the reaction to last week's unnecessary two-inches-of-fluffy-snow closing? The school system got burned on that one, so they are not jumping the gun this time, is that it? I can't wait much longer to shower, etc. if I'm going to be ready for a normal opening time...

you only have to hold on for like 15 more minutes buddy

chip..absolutely. politics is winning over science. I talked with an administrator who handles the AM-PM kindergarten switch and they said early dismissal is always a massive disaster for them. Kids waiting at the school parents late due to roads, teachers can't leave because they have to stay with the kids. This will be the first time in my life on the planet that many large districts ignored a winter storm warning that is currently in effect and opened on time. I'm sorry if this happens folks, just be prepared for anything today because you're going to get it.

Garrett County is closed already for pete's sake. Garrett. They hardly ever close.

Chip, might as well get in the shower. As soon as you do, it'll happen.

Well then, I will hit the shower, to do my part to get us all out of school, ha ha... sheesh! Politics, oi...

Yeah I like how Kent and Queen Anne's are delaying. That'll be great. Let's wait until the snow and sleet REALLY KICK IN, then bring everyone in during the morning rush just went things are going downhill. They'll so appreciate how you thought of them.

Mr. Foot - Per the radar the moisture seems to be lifting pass No.VA or is that reforming I see?

School is CLOSED!!!

Forecast now calling for 7-11" of snow.

unless the schools are pulling an event where a few years ago we went to school and they just sent us right home from school didnt even get out of the bus and it counted as a school day but we got the day off

That would be a neat little trick tyler but parents sure would not appreciate it, nor would the parents' employers. I don't mind either way because I can walk to school but 99.989% of those who read this site don't have to walk. Oh what a day this is going to be.

Might as get go drown my fear in some high octane coffee.

Justin Berk on ABC2 News is going to really hammer the districts for not making the call earlier. He said at 6:09 "Oh the temperature is just now starting to drop and the snow's coming down with it."

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Politics is right.

After last Thursday, I bet a bunch of Yuppie mommies called in because they missed aerobics...

Snow and wind have begun in earnest at Dundalk. Temperature has dropped 1 degree in past hour.

But what is the point of having valid observations that back up the science?

Congrats Mr. B, hope you get 12" for good measure

Politics... gotta love it. I just woke the kids, and they were dis-happy. Oh well...

This time, the science is going to bite back HARD.

Oh how fun this day shall be. I wonder how many bus drivers, teachers, etc will be calling in sick. Nightmare is so true. The school systems that are not closing with the radar looking as it does, really run the risk of major lawsuits. Worked in a county where this happened in 1994. Also, was no fun for staff when the last kids to leave were at 6 PM because the busses were getting stuck or the drivers not comfortable driving.

Berkeley co WV closed! However I wish my husband's district would have done the same. Loudoun stayed open. What a nightmare it could be! I just hope they let him go before it gets really bad.

I think the 2hr delay schools got it right -- more time to make a decision while the powers-that-be wait for physical proof of all the winter storm warnings we have been getting.
