"Stopping by a woods
on a snowy evening..."
- Poem by Robert Frost

10:20 PM Thursday 1/20/2011  A weak to moderate winter storm is bisecting the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys having delivered a general swath of 3-6" in locations where Winter Storm Warnings are posted. Winter Weather Advisories currently blanket most of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast for tonight into tomorrow.

Our final call is for 2-4" across West Virginia, western MD and Pennsylvania. For Central Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey, 1-2" is expected. This brief snow will provide powderounds an excellent kodak moment tomorrow morning for some nice facebook avatars. Additional details on this winter weather event can be found in these zone pages, including Central Maryland, the Capital Region, and in the Mid-Atlantic Winter Stormcast Zone in the tab noted above.

AND NOW, FOR SOMETHING
COMPLETELY DIFFERENT:
In celebration of our site's seven-year anniversary next Wednesday, we encourage any reader to post in our National facebook page creative and appropriate ways to spell "Foot's Forecast"   using objects. It can be as simple as writing in snow on a car window (like Photocaster Emily has done), or with twigs, rocks, shovels, newspaper clippings, skittles, sand from Central Florida - you name it. This is your time to effervesce with creative energies and show us how much fun you can have with the name of that spot-on team of weather forecasters that are changing the world...one facebook post at a time.

Follow this link to our National page to post your FF brand pic proposal. The winning 3 designs or most creative ways of displaying Foot's Forecast receive a team t-shirt. Submit your entries until 6:00 am Wednesday 1/26.

I like that FF is sticking with the 2-4" snowfall because all of the tv weather readers in DC are saying maybe 1-2" or just a trace-1"...even up to PA line!

C'mon man! Faith in the flakes! (imagine smiley with halo here!)

Still waiting to see whether Andy/Manwich is sticking with his original 2-4" too...or has modified it based on that dendrite thing from last night! :)

I actually like the maps the NWS has posted above. I think that's what we get from this. 2 inches around Baltimore City metro North. and 4 or maybe 5 inches of snow for the barbarians that reside across the Mason Dixon Line. Red Lion and the Eastern Bad Lands where I live are just inside the 4 inch mark. Will be fun to nowcast. I still miss the old comment section.

Howard County's WWA has been cancelled.

*sigh* Once again, we look to be in the "snow hole."

On the bright side, I'll be thrilled if we go to school ON TIME tomorrow because exams can go as scheduled and my HS son can get his wisdom teeth out in the afternoon as planned!

Looking forward to more snow chances next week. The models are a mess, but what we can say is there is a storm tracking to our south and up the coast. Could be anything from a Kahuna to a complete bust. Still, plenty cold and stormy, so yes there is a chance! Been a busy week so I can't wait until Friday. Little worried though, since I misplaced the key to the liquor cabinet. Will be searching for the key tonight in preparation for Friday night R and R festivities. If key is not found, sledge hammer will do it! Here is wishing the education crowd get their two hour late call! Me, I just like a storm, I will work even after a blizzard.

NeedaSnowday said...

Andy, just drive that useless beast into the liquor cabinet.. it is just collectin' dust!!

As Amy pointed out .. if a delay were to be in effect for HoCo - they would close due to transportation (?) issues..

Jen - Red Lion said...

I'm still going to call 4-6"..

Lori said...

Sorry Andy, I meant to return that key to you...and I noticed your liquor is getting a little low..okay so it was low after I got done with it. Either way we need a refill..er..I mean you need to re-stock :)

Rufus said...

So is the low not forming off the VA coast? I was a wee concerned when folks to the west were getting snow already. Ah well tis the winter we have had... Andy slegehammer...crow bar whatever works :)

I miss the historic comment page also...if the old court house in Towson is now being called historic...should work here right?

Leslie said...

I'm getting exhausted from being hopeful. Is it time to look forward to Tuesday?

From Justin's FB:
Justin Berk, Meteorologist Meso-Analysis at 7 PM: This Low pressure might be a little stronger than modeling, but not a good position for us. Instead of passing through VA, it might head directly over central MD, which is not ideal. It will bring heavier snow to PA though.
This has brought in the SE wind, which normally increases moisture for... us, but it has also kept temps at 37F at BWI. The bulk of the precip will be after midnight as the arctic air arrives, but it will only be a few hours of moderate intensity.
I will stick with my forecast from earlier, but it might be a stretch around the metro area. This should be done at day break. Sorry Annapolis, Maryland, but I don't see you winning here.

Me likey for PA!!!

Matt S said...

why does central MD always get screwed?? and why are there only 14 comments shown at a time... do the old ones disappear or what?

Matt S said...

disregard that last part of my last comment.... i didn't realize that the comments were broken up by articles...

HoCoKtchr said...

Well...HoCo will need to decide what to do if there is some snow...as we are scheduled for a 3 hour early dismissal...that will make a 2 hour late tricky!

I know some counties have plans for this in place...but I don't know of any for HoCo! (doesn't mean there aren't any!) It will be good to get another day in...

I guess we will all start hoping for Tuesday. :)

And Andy...seems like you should break into the liquor cabinet...and just keep it out! Seriously seems like it will be needed!!!

NWS just cancelled advisory for Ho Co. :-(

I am crying for my good friends to my near south. I am a only 50 miles north of Baltimore, if Justin's ideas come to fruition we may need the manpower to shovel the extra inch we will get. Any volunteers! You know its been a tame winter when an extra inch can make or break a storm.

Hello friends; tomorrow's storm looks somewhat disappointing. However, a Friday storm is such a waste. I'm looking forward to early next week's weather activity. Still a little early to speculate, but at least it gives me something to do instead of trying to decide if I'm a Steelers or Jets fan this weekend.

Hey Matt, don't apologize. The way comments are organized on this new site is not logical. The may be separated by post, but that is going to stifle discussion. I agree a running list is much better. If multiple updates will be made during the day, much will be lost from teh discussion.

Amy said...

HoCoTcher- No possibility for delay in the county due to early dismissal. It's either all in or all out. I personally want to go to school to get exams done in a decent spread of time.

HoCoKtchr said...

I'm with you Amy. I want to get a day in...but somehow still get disappointed if we don't get real SNOW!

And I have tons to get done during an early dismissal time...so guess I will go with that "glass half full" theory.... :)

Remember. Everyone sings the praises of last winter. So far, this January has been MUCH SNOWIER than last January. Who knows what the rest of the month and Feb will bring. Plenty of storms and cold at least.

Hi everyone- we are working to bring back the original comment feature you are all accustomed to. I don't like this format either - but with a volunteer staff and limited funds, our miracles occur Sssslllooowwwly.

Manotew is my word LOL

Pooh another storm a fizzled....well we can hope for Tuesday. Andy think we got a 4-6 inch last weekend in Jan...just remember selling tickets to the dance that benefits july 4th and it was snowing the day we sold tickets. It was one of those dustings that turned into something...instead of something that turns into a dusting :)

Rufus said...

Kayaw? LOL Translated into Ok ya'll

WWA is saying 1-2 inches in Ba Co

ANDY Southern York County, PA said...

Rufus you are right, but we are still 8 days away from the last weekend in Jan. Jan this year has been snowier so far than last. That is not saying much, but I've eeked out about 7 inches total this Jan which is better than the nada last year at this time. So there is hope.

Ravensbbr said...

Nothing yet here in NE CC. Snowthrower still down for the count, so that should guarantee something, right? :-)

(who knew the starting cord would rip right off like that on the 78th consecutive pull after nothing happens upon changing the fuel filter? try explaining that one to the mechanic)

So happy to hear the comments are going back to the old way. I do miss out on the discussion that keeps going. Nice to see how people's thoughts change during this whole storm process. Bummed with the turn of events. I'm thinking no delay or anything....darn. Would have been a sweet way to start a long weekend.

Rufus said...

True Mary. I'm beginning to feel that I'll be surprised if we get a flurry. DP is still 10 below the actual temp. IR loop looks like bulk of precip stays well west of us.

Ahhh Rufus is sometimes a pain but he is never glass :) He loves me I shouldn't complain....

This storm has fizzled out! Northern Baltimore county may get a coating to an inch at best around 3:00 am From York Pa south it will be a dusting to an inch. The trend this year continues. The storm next week looks like a minor event at best in my book. Too much hype right now. Too many ingredients have to come together to make a large storm happen in this set up. I am holding out hope for February, but despite all the hype generated by accuweather, the storm next week will be a very minor event at best for our region.

ANDY Southern York County, PA said...

The latest model trends for the storm next week show close to 2 inches liquid for our area. That could equate to 2 plus feet of snow. Problem is, this will be a mix and mostly RAIN if you take the models verbatim. Plenty of time for this to shift either way. The models at the latest moment point to a MORE wet than white solution. If they are correct, build an Ark now WOW! It looks like some storm either way. I don't trust the models this season, so this is definitely something to watch!

The GREAT FLOOD of 2011? The Great BLIZZARD of 2011? You be the Judge. Could go either way. I don't know. I am glad I found the sledge hammer and started the weekend early. Work will be tough on Friday!

Just a little gripe and not about FF more directed at the state of Md. and Frederick county .Yesterday they spent tons of money pre salting and sanding everything in and around Frederick. This morning I get up to clear skys, NO SNOW and a clear radar. What a waste of tax dollars!!!
