Since you were able to hold on for one more day, by tomorrow you will notice conditions starting to turn around. Despite just one more night of frigid temperatures, the Arctic high over the soon-to-be melting Polar regions of Texarkana will slowly moderate over the next several days. Thankfully, Mother Nature and Old Man Winter are stepping back from their extreme ways of late to grant us all a reprieve this weekend. With calmer times ahead, visit our Education section for a new lesson by "Dr. Ratio" of Weather University (WxU). A jacket is definitely required for this lesson, as the topics are snow, sleet, freezing rain and virga.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Remember the "Blizzard of '83" ? Reminisce with us via this brief report in the Winter Stormcast Zone. Old time powderhounds will recall the crippling thundersnow extravaganza 28 years ago this weekend that brought Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York to their knees. Now THAT was an extreme way to winter weather.

THIS WEEKEND: As the high drifts slowly east, winds will shift to the west and eventually southwest, drawing in milder Pacific air across most of the country. However, a concern is once that conveyer belt of warmth gets underway: By Sunday, landscapes of white may transform into a mudfest as water from rapidly melting snow will have trouble finding a place to go. At least temperatures will make the recovery bearable, with highs this weekend aiming for the mid 40's for the Northeast and Ohio valleys, low 50's in the Mid-Atlantic, 60's in the Southeast, and near 70 in the Southern plains. TO NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND... Our Long Range Analysis Team has posted their first overview of the weather pattern heading into mid- and late February. Visit the Long Range Zone for details.

The upcoing warmth maybe a very good Omen if you like snow. It represents a pattern flip. Plenty of warmth and plenty of frigid air nearby. That can be a recipe for heavy snow storms in the middle atlantic. I like our chances going forward from President's weekend. I am looking at President's day weekend 2/20 and 2/21 as a potential flip in the pattern. In the meantime enjoy the warmth. I sill have massive snow cover in my yard. Lowest point is 6 inches, many areas still have a solid foot as of today. That should all be gone by midweek. Driving into Maryland on I-83 the snow cover becomes patchy just below the Maryland Line exit 36 on I-83. From that exit on North there is 100% snow cover. Hunt Valley has snow piles but plenty of bare grass. Baltimore and points south just have piles for the most part. We are not done with snow though, there is plenty of time for a large scale hit, and the warmth is what we need to ignite the fire.
Thank you, Precipitation Sage of Pennsylvaina South!
JUST what we needed ... a precipitation pump-up!
I do remember that before some of our larger snowfalls (as I have mentioned in an earlier post)
a warm-up, :-[ then WHOMP =-O .
You can thank me... HA... yup... we are scheduled to return home to MD from FLA on 2/20....
Have a great trip Needasnowday! I'm betting, if in fact snow does appear, it will be of that heavy we variety. The good news - it won't stay for long!
Heh, one of my co-workers is from Columbia. She said one of the Baltimore mets (Tom Collins?) said there's a chance of snow next Saturday, but not to worry about it. Looks like nothing will come of it. That's crazy! No one can say to worry or not to worry at this point!!
*DONT_KNOW*
Must. Use. Snowblower. Some. Time. This. Winter. :-)
All I am saying is rest your back and enjoy the warmth. Teleconnections for the period from the 20th to the 28th are pretty wild in my book. The pattern has changed, If you like warmth enjoy it, if you want snow, the roaring Feb 20's are are not likely to disappoint. What do I know though, I'm just a guy that lives in the woods. A massive warm-up is exactly what we need to set the stage for a major winter storm. Lights, camera, "ACTION"? Time will tell.
Although this winter has been relatively tame in terms of snowstorms, what has fell has had amazing staying power. I have had almost constant snowcover through January and now half of Februrary. Very few winters including last year featured such long durationsnow cover as this one around here. A few pictures from 10 minutes ago from my hood. What is left reminds me of typical snow you will find on the slopes of ski Liberty or Roundtop. It is very heavy and sleety in consistency. Regardless, by Wednesday all will be gone here save for some piles.
Thanks so much BP!! Hope your trip goes off without a hitch too!!
