"Free at last...free at last..."
- The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

6:00 PM EST 2/12/2011 A good Saturday evening to all. The cold pattern which has been in place recently, funneling arctic air into eastern U.S., has started to break. Milder air will move in from the southwest, bringing most areas east of the Mississippi some of the warmest temperatures we've seen in weeks or even months! In honor of Dr King's speech referenced above, this is why we are pleased to say that many areas of the country can say "we are free at last" from this long cold spell.

So since you've been cooped up inside for such a while, if you are not buried in feet of snow, get yourself in the Valentine's mode and go pickup that gift for your special someone tonight or tomorrow while yout still have time.

For a roundup of our forecasters' reports, click the Eastern or Central tabs for team updates. A look into the next 2 weeks is posted in the Long Range Zone, led by Southeast Team Leader Daniel Ross of Georgia Tech. Forecaster Nic Roberson in North Carolina also has an excellent overview of the weather pattern looking ahead.

This week, our team has reached some historic milestones, thanks to your loyalty and readership. On 2/09/2011 this website crossed 1 million views for the past month, and we were simultaneously featured in the front page of the Dundalk Eagle. The article discussed how our facebook forecast pages were presented at the American Meteorological Society conference in Seattle by an official of the National Weather Service. The presentation showed the Central Maryland facebook page as one case study in how the NWS would be able to leverage social media in conveying weather information to the public.

Evidence of the effectiveness? We learned yesterday that our combined 27 facebook pages have garnerned over 110 million views since January 2010. Now that is advancing science literacy if you ask us!

Have a great weekend and enjoy the warmer weather! (Forecast Apprentice M. Natoli and Mr. Foot - editor)

And may another storm present itself (please, please, please), so you may continue honing your skills!  :)

Good evening everyone...Been reading some of the forcast for the upcoming week..Temps may approach the 60's by end of the week..But still have heard that the week after things may turn on us with a storm...I can remember past years like 96 or 97 I think it was ..storm came in on a Sunday right after New Years or there abouts in early January ..It was like 60 degress that saturday ..Temps dropped and we had like 2 feet of snow that Sunday and into Monday..  and the super storm of 93...although that time we had snow that turned into alot of sleet in souther Balt county but still received like 12 inches and I think north and west received alot more..So does anyone have any thoughts on that...

Hi all, I'm back from Boston and all their snow.  They have already lost about a foot of their packed snow.  Today, at 21*, the "snert" remaining is frozen solid like "jersey walls" along the roads outside Boston proper.   I had a wonderful visit, but it's always great to be home! :-D    I guess tomorrow is a "fire up the grill" dat to cook those filets that have been in the freezer.
By the way; I flew Jet Blue"  - what a great airline!!  At $78.00 round trip and first bag free, free nice snacks, and really friendly staff; who could ask for more!

Welcome back BP!  Glad it went well and you are returning to our balmy weather!  Firing up the grill sounds delightful... even though I like when Andy fires up the Beast!

Thanks on Jet Blue recommendation.. have to consider that for next Feb!  Looks like we will get out of BWI - much easier than last year --- eeking out between two blizzards!!  Students are so amped up to get to Orlando and high 70's!! The weather there looks glorious.....  so, Andy... do I need to prop my shovel out for our return on 20th?

I can pretty much guarantee snow around the 23rd. Bought my son expensive theater tickets for that night for his birthday. I'm thinking blizzard. Perhaps I should buy hin a snow blower as well.
