What comes after the Kahuna?
  • INTERMITTENT SNOW SQUALLS into the overnight hours, with light accumulation up to 1/2" possible overnight from central PA to northern MD counties.
  • SQUALLS likely to return mid-morning Wed into afternoon hours, could produce a coating on untreated roads and sidewalks.
  • NEW PULSES OF SIGNIFICANT LATE SEASON COLD AIR are set to arrive early next week into next weekend, keeping much of the month's  temperatures below normal.
  • THREE SYSTEMS TO WATCH next 2 weeks are this Saturday, next Tuesday and the 25th-26th.

11:00 AM ET 3/14 - PRECIP BELOW PA/MD LINE ENDING BY 2 PM, HEAVY SNOW IN PA CONTINUING THROUGH AFTERNOON. Let us know your precip and road conditions, and here is what we see for the 24 hours ahead:
  • OVERNIGHT.. what happened? A significant push of warm air from the Atlantic worked into the region in the early morning hours, changing snow to sleet and then freezing rain for many areas south of I-70. This cut way into earlier expected snow totals. Computer models and forecasters alike did not identify the potential intensity of this warm air push until after it was showing up on the ground - and hadn't even been showing on the radar. Hence, the "Look Out The Window" model.
  • CURRENTLY, as the Low begins pulling north, cold air is moving into the region on the west side, and will reduce the duration of sleet/freezing rain. However, next 2-3 hours may see intense precipitation rates as 1/2" of liquid or more is working north and west from the Low center.
  • MORNING & AFTERNOON: By 9 AM, we expect all precip to change back over to snow in most areas north of Route 50, with areas south of that over to snow between 9-10 AM. Another 1-2" through 12 PM on top of icy roads and sidewalks will make for treacherous and dangerous travel.
  • OVERNIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY: Temperatures plunge into the teens or low 20s, refreezing over hard any standing water or snow, creating widespread road ice issues for the PM commute and Wed AM as well.
NWS HOURLY FROM TIMONIUM, MD to represent how rest of the day will progress.

8:10 PM ET 3/13 - Seeing powder or flakes but getting cold feet? We advise giving your brain a break from pouring over the radar. There is a lot going for this storm, and for now, we allow the courage to let Nature will take over and fulfill it's part of the forecast.
Readers are reporting snow arriving right on schedule as outlined in our Impact Graphic below. Let us know when you see snow, especially when it starts to stick! Additional updates will be posted below the graphics, or scroll to previous posts for our earlier statements.

Just drove from Towson to Reisterstown. Far too many cars on the road, but Beltway and 795 were just wet. Detected a bit of sleet. Grassy areas turning shades of white in R-town but the roads still have the upper hand and holding off any sticking snow. The flakes are being illuminated by the outdoor floodlights as they flutter downwards. The lines on the deck are neatly stacked in a row, with white borders of fallen snow. Towson/Ohio State lax game scheduled for tomorrow evening cancelled/postponed.

Justin Berk blog shows Baltimore City right on the sleet/snow line all night. I hope he's wrong with the line by 30 miles to the East.

Sleeting for the past half hour in Hampden. Maybe 2 inched on the ground. Roads beginning to really accumulate. Hopefully it changes back over to snow!

Nicholas Schuman said...

Sleet and freezing rain right now at bwi. It is going be a mess tomorrow. Especially if it stays like this and the temp holds at 29 degrees.

In Bel Air and south to Edgewood, it snowed hard until about 1:00 whereby it turned into sleet / rain / freezing rain. Probably got just about 2 inches of real snow before the conversion. Now at 3:00 A.M. it is all just a wretched, sloppy mess that is sadly, annoyingly, typical of a Maryland storm.

be careful out there folks.

Terrie Mead said...

Just east of I-97 where it meets Rt 178. A little wind, sleet w/ some rain.
about an inch of snow on the ground; trees covered with ice. In a word: Yuck!

Westsidehideaway said...

Bust for Bmore. Freezing rain all night after an inch or two of snow.

Mike Cheuvront said...

Even here at the Maryland, Hanover pa line it's sleeting. What a waste. Check my posts, I feared this middle level warm air issue. Storm needed to go a little east, but it just didn't do it.

shanebog said...

BUST in Woodstock MD! Only about 2 inches with sleet and freezing rain now!

Tiny kahuna!

KahuNO.

What a bummer,,,

Mike Cheuvront said...

I have 8 inches but extremely heavy sleet now.

Rebecca said...

Sigh...at least I got to "listen" to you guys once this season.

Mike Cheuvront said...

Very sorry bmore friends. I lived in Woodlawn 40 years before coming to northern Carroll county. The warm air has made it even this far. Storm was just too far west😩

James Patterson said...

Here's to hoping it changes back over to snow soon and we get a strong melt and re-freezes overnight tonight! One more day off of school please!

Pat Abrahms said...

Well we have a mixed mess in Catonsville. Snow with sleet then freezing rain on top of that. The cars are encased in a shell of ice and now we await the turnover back to snow. With freezing temperatures and wind coming this will stay a dangerous situation all day.

EGN said...

We've got about 2.5"-3.0" of crust-covered dense slop in Perry Hall. Temperature has fallen from about 31 F at 7 AM to 27.5 F. I just cleaned off our cars, anticipating that it'll all turn hard as a rock tonight. No snowplows have made it into our court, yet. I am wondering if BCPS may be off again tomorrow.

Westsidehideaway said...

Hey Team. Be forewarned. There isn't much accumulation but what is out there is Heavy. Take lots of breaks and don't overdue it. Shoveling snow causes lots of heart attacks.

Westsidehideaway said...

And the big kahuna of 2016 last Jan caused me to get a hernia repair. Take it easy out there.

Just barely 5" here in Westminster, although there is still light snow. Any word on how much more we might get? Local networks aren't saying much.

Looks like Big KaNONa in Bel Air, MD. Only got about 2" of mostly sleet

NeedaSnowday said...

BBR.. hysterical!

Right now we have light snow falling! Plow came through about an hour ago... with freezing temps forecasted for tonight, refreeezing, schools will delay, possibly shut down again?

Missing that big snowfall, πŸ˜” oh well...

Mike Cheuvront said...

Ravensbbr---I received 8-10 before sleet. What I feared when we spoke last night happened 😑

Detritus Effluvium said...

Cecil County got a few inches of slushy stuff. The worst thing is that the ice is breaking off a lot of tree limbs. DP&L had most of their Maryland customers lose power at 7:55 AM but it was restored here around 2 PM.

I think I will use the 4WD New Holland tractor to clear the slush off our country lane this afternoon before the hard freeze. I just got it home last week and gosh-darn-it, I'm going to remove some snow with it!

Hope everyone gets through this unscathed, except for the disappointment we are feeling towards the Mini-Kahuna of 2017.

ravensbbr said...

Yeah, same here, Mike, about 8"-10" before it started compacting. You were right about the warm air infiltrating, good call. I let my "But I haven't had my winter yet" blues get in the way of my better judgement...I think I've pushed around lighter wet concrete before...

Oh well. Beats living in FL where they never get this fun.

Baseball and BBQ's right around the corner...I think...please no more slushball-huna's this year...?

Neeeeeeeeedy,

LOTS of snow falling now, JUST after I scrupulously cleaned off my car, BUT I love snow so much that I don't care. Looks so beautiful floating down. I'll deal with it later. :)
